When designing your rooms, skirting boards may transform them from half-finished to beautifully framed. But how do you put these vital border boards in place? Skirting boards should be the first items you install while decorating, even before the flooring.
This means you won’t have to reinstall the skirting if the flooring needs to be changed in the future. Installing skirting boards may seem intimidating if you’ve never done it before. Professional-looking skirting boards are only a saw and a drill away with this easy-to-follow tutorial.
How To Install Skirting Boards
1. Research And Planning
Before you begin your job, learn how to install skirting boards correctly. Planning and preparation should always be the first step.
Installing a new skirting board, for example, is pointless if you plan to remove it to install new floorboards shortly. Also, take some time to look into the various types and sizes of obtainable skirting. Primed MDF, supplied MDF, softwood, and other materials are available for skirting.
When you’ve decided on your skirting, you’re ready to start. Before you begin, read ahead and make sure you understand the procedures in this tutorial.
2.Materials And Tools
To begin, acquire the necessary tools and resources to ensure that you are well prepared:
- Mitre/miter box – A tool that makes it possible to cut skirtings at the proper angle
- Saw
- Tape measure
- Drill and bits
- Screwdrivers or nail guns
- Rawl plugs Screws
- Sandpaper
- Protective equipment
- Pencil
- Applicator gun and nozzle
- Spirit level
- Skirting boards from sites such as mdfskirtingworld.co.uk
- Adhesive (if using)
3. Measure Up
To get a tidy finish with the fewest number of joins, use a tape measure to calculate the entire length of skirting you’ll need, then add 20% more.
4.Find The Studs in The Wall
With a stud finder and masking tape, indicate the location of studs behind the wall.
5.Trim The Inside Corners
Using a handsaw, trim the skirting boards following the specified lines, allowing an additional 1-2mm for a snug fit. A 90-degree angle should be maintained on the inside corners.
6.Remove The Furthest Corners
The most challenging aspect of skirting board installation for many individuals is figuring out how to cut skirting exterior board corners (miter corners).
Place the skirting board on a miter box affixed to a workbench and cut a 45-degree angle through it.
Then, using a coping saw, build the connecting 45-degree corner on another board as nearly as feasible. Allow a few centimetres at the top of the board to overhang the other board for a snug fit.
7. Join The Skirting Boards Together
Place the ready boards in their final positions. Using nails to attach skirting boards to the wooden frame behind the wall, use a nail gun to shoot nails over the designated wall studs.
Ensure you safeguard your eyes and ears with proper eye and ear protection. If you’re using a sticky grip, apply it to the back of the board at regular intervals.
Cross-nail them or apply more glue to make the miter corners more stable.
8.Cut The Molding to Size
- If your baseboard has molding at the top and bottom, it should be trimmed the same way as the boards, with the inner and outer corners cut at the same angles. A 30-degree chamfered edge should be carved onto quad (bottom) molding that meets the architrave surrounding entrances.
9. Fix The Moldings in Place
- Make any necessary changes with the handsaw or file to ensure that the molding sits above and below the skirting board. Using the nail gun or glue, secure the mouldings to the wall studs. If the floor fluctuates, quad moulding must not be linked to it.
10. Complete The Skirting Boards
- The impression you wish to achieve will determine how you finish skirting boards. Nails that protrude from the surface should be slammed in first. You may use putty in the same colour as the boards to hide them. The skirting boards may then be stained or painted, but make sure you know how to patch gaps in skirting boards and take precautions to protect the walls and floor.
- Installing a skipping board might be a complex undertaking. However, if you follow the above methods, you will be guaranteed to get it correctly. However, you should only buy skirting boards from reputable retailers like mdfskirtingworld.co.uk.
